Decorative concrete
Using a Concrete Mold
Using concrete a mold are a way to design beautiful and often, functional concrete pieces. Sometimes purely decorative (sundials and statues), sometimes useful (stepping stones and patio blocks), concrete designs created from molds are always durable and cost-effective.
Precast molds are helpful in building a huge variety of landscaping projects. Concrete can be mixed with a variety of colors and mineral oxides to create unique blocks, walls and decorative art. The mixed concrete is poured into reusable molds, cured and then sealed to smooth and strengthen. They can be custom-made at a reasonable cost, especially when you consider that they are reusable for hundreds of casts.
Molded Concrete Accents
Often, molded concrete is decorative. Do not underestimate the breadth of the variety of molded shapes. Precast concrete can be made to look like almost anything! Statuary of people, animals or abstractions is commonly done using precast concrete. The larger the lawn, the more possibilities there are, including ponds and fountains. Your decorative accents will be beautiful, unique, durable and cost effective.
Molding the Concrete
A little “mold release” is applied to the mold. The cement is mixed by following the directions and then poured into one half of the mold. Before filling all the way, the cement should be shaken a little so that every crevice in the mold is filled and the cement is settled. Fill the mold rest of the way and shake again to get a flat, even top. Set aside to dry for at least 24 hours (longer if it’s in a humid environment). When the concrete is dry, turn your mold over and lightly tap on the bottom to pop the concrete stone out.
